A Riverside County man was fined more than $20,000 and sentenced to a week in jail for poaching lobsters inside a marine protected area (MPA). This is the first resource crime conviction since the MPAs off theSouthern Californiacoast went into effect on January 1, 2012.

California Releases Fish and Wildlife Strategic Vision

SACRAMENTO - The adopted California Fish and Wildlife Strategic Vision (CFWSV) and two accompanying documents can now be viewed at www.vision.ca.gov. In accordance with AB 2376 (Huffman, 2010) the strategic vision aims to improve the ability of the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) and the California Fish and Game Commission (F&GC) to successfully tackle the challenges of the 21st century.

Endangered Steelhead Bust Illustrates Need for Protection

While conducting a warrant search for illegal marijuana Mendocino County law enforcement officials were surprised when they also found endangered wild steelhead and poached ducks.

On March 7, Department of Fish and Game (DFG) warden Don Powers seized 18 wild steelhead and 56 ducks from freezers in two locations while assisting the Mendocino County Sheriff's Department in serving search warrants for illegal marijuana propagation. The wild steelhead, 17 of which were spawning females, are believed to be from the Garcia River in Mendocino County, where they are protected and listed under the Endangered Species Act.

SACRAMENTO - The California Fish and Wildlife Strategic Vision (CFWSV) Executive Committee has unanimously adopted a strategic vision and accompanying recommendations for California's fish and wildlife agencies. In accordance with AB 2376 (Huffman, 2010) the strategic vision aims to guide the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) and the California Fish and Game Commission (F&GC) to successfully tackle the challenges of the twenty-first Century. The strategic vision and accompanying documents will be made available at www.vision.ca.gov on or about April 20.

Port of San Diego's Day at The Docks

The Port of San Diego's April 15 Day At The Docks - the West Coast's largest public celebration of sportfishing - is just over the horizon, with upwards of 25,000 expected at the all-day event.

Beginning at 9 a.m., the admission-free 33rd annual Day At The Docks will celebrate the beginning of the sportfishing season by showcasing the most modern inshore, offshore and long range sportfishing fleet at America's Cup Harbor on San Diego Bay. The event is "family friendly" and will feature numerous exhibits geared toward kids. Youngsters will be introduced to the fun and rewards of fishing at each of the three landings with pens of willing Pacific mackerel eager for bits of squid used as bait.

Isabella Lake Fishing Derby is Set to Offer Record Prizes of Over $250,000 for the 2012 Derby!

The total prize money up for grabs has been set for the 23rd Annual Isabella Lake Fishing Derby presented by the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce. The number of “major” sponsors this year has been set at ten, with each to sponsor a $10,000 tagged trout. These major sponsors are: Berkley; Shakespeare; Budweiser; Isabella Supermarket and Mt. Mesa Market; Automobile Club of Southern California; California Land Management; Sierra Gateway Markets; French Gulch & North Fork Marinas; Renewable Resources Group; and Central Valley Sportsmen & RV Show. In addition, the Kern River Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring a trout worth $20,000!
