Archery deer hunters: Be aware of new permit requirements

PHOENIX — Archery deer hunters are advised that some game management units formerly open to over-the-counter archery permit-tags will now require a permit issued through the big game draw application process for the 2008-09 hunting season.

It's May, and many outdoorsmen and women have turned from hunting turkeys to pursuit of spawning crappie or other popular sportfish. However, the avid hunter knows that there's still time to bag a big gobbler, and late in the season may be one of the best times. By May, most hens have been bred and are on the nest. This leaves lonely gobblers with fewer hens to mate, making toms as vulnerable to a well-placed hen decoy and call as he might have been when the breeding season began.

Warmer weather and spring green-up continues to improve hunting access but plan carefully if you are heading into high elevations as traditional routes may still be unusable. Bear hunting is picking up with warmer weather and more hunters are checking in a bear; remember check-in is now mandatory.

MEEKER LANDOWNER AND DOW TEAM UP FOR SPRING YOUTH TURKEY HUNT

The Colorado Division of Wildlife and a Meeker-area ranch recently hosted a very special youth only turkey hunt. The once-in-a-lifetime private land hunt, held in mid-April at the Seven Lakes Ranch east of Meeker, was coordinated by local DOW personnel and volunteers from the ranch.

COLUMBUS, OH - Governor Ted Strickland enjoyed a day in the field on Saturday, May 10, during the first-ever Governor's Annual Turkey Hunt. The event, which took place in Muskingum and Coshocton counties, included current and former NFL players who partnered with nationally known hunting guides on an outing with 11 area youths.

Alligator hunting permits go on sale June 3

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will begin selling approximately 4,500 alligator harvest permits on a first-come, first-served basis at 10 a.m. (EDT) June 3 and will continue through 11:59 p.m. (EDT) June 9.

FWP honors Region 5 hunter and bowhunter education volunteers

BILLINGS — Some of the teenagers who took Ted Moore’s first hunter education class in 1963 now are old enough to have grandchildren in the program.

Moore, the longest-serving hunter education volunteer in Yellowstone County, was recognized with a plaque May 10 for 45 years of work with the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks classes.

Changes Proposed for Mountain Lion Hunting Season

CUSTER STATE PARK, S.D.—The S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Commission is considering major revisions to the state’s mountain lion hunting season. The commission approved the season proposal at its May meeting at the State Game Lodge at Custer State Park.

MORE ANTLERLESS BIG GAME HUNTING PERMITS

More permits will be available in Utah this year to hunt big game animals that don't have antlers.

At their May 8 meeting in Salt Lake City, members of the Utah Wildlife Board increased the number of cow elk, cow moose and doe pronghorn antelope permits available for this fall's hunts.

Mentors introduce 237 youth to turkey hunting (May 6, 2008)

This spring 237 youth were introduced to turkey hunting as part of a unique partnership among the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and families. Ninety-four of the participants bagged a bird. Meanwhile, Minnesota’s turkey population continues to expand, creating opportunities for hunters of all ages.

Online Bowhunter Education Available

Fish, Wildlife and Parks is now offering bowhunter education over the Internet. Although the course is online, students must still take a field test to receive their bowhunter education card.

Several field days are set throughout the state for online students. For more information check the National Bowhunter Education Foundation web site at www.nbef.org .

DIVISION OF WILDLIFE TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETINGS ON STATUS OF WATERFOWL HUNTING CHANGES IN NORTHEAST

Representatives from the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) will hold five meetings in May to discuss proposed changes to waterfowl hunting in the northeast region of the state. Potential property hunting regulation changes to affect restricted access, limited hunting through reservations, hunting hours restrictions, and mandatory check out will be discussed for the following State Wildlife Areas: Jackson Lake, Jean K. Tool, Brush, Atwood, Overland Trail, Bravo, and Red Lion. Potential regulation changes to allow waterfowl hunting from boats will be discussed for Jackson and Jumbo Reservoirs.

Some Spring Black Bear Seasons To Close Soon

Spring black bear hunting in some management units closes May 15, while hunting in other bear management units closes May 31 or June 15.

Hunters are responsible for checking the 2008 bear regulations for exact season dates before they hunt.
