The late summer hot weather is sure to bring out boaters. But before you hit the water make sure to have the proper decals on your boat.

Montana requires two decals for sailboats 12 feet and longer and all motorboats and personal watercraft.

Aboard Air Force One late yesterday, President Bush signed S. 2766, "The Clean Boating Act of 2008," which permanently restores a long-standing exemption for recreational boats from permitting requirements under the Clean Water Act. This signing of the bill is the capstone moment of a two-year campaign to eliminate an onerous permit program for recreational boaters that would have dictated maintenance and operation procedures, potentially subjected boaters to citizen lawsuits, and put recreational boats under a penalty system designed for industrial polluters.

The American Sportfishing Association applauds the bi-partisan actions of the House and Senate with their passage of S. 2766, the Clean Boating Act of 2008. West Marine, Inc. said net sales reached $226.7 million for the 13 weeks ended June 28, down 8.2% from net sales of $247.1 million for the thirteen weeks ended June 30, 2007. Comparable store sales declined 7.8% versus the same period a year ago.

MONITORING FINDS QUAGGA MUSSELS IN LAKE GRANBY

A State and Federal initiative to gather more information on the presence of invasive mussels in Colorado confirmed the detection of quagga mussel larvae in Lake Granby in July. Quagga mussels are very similar to the zebra mussels that were found last fall in Pueblo Reservoir.

Deadly Holiday Weekend Prompts Water Safety Warnings

AUSTIN, Texas — During the July 4 holiday weekend, at least 13 Texans drowned in public waters. Seven of those were in North Texas, and together they bring the total number of water-related fatalities in Texas to 66 for this year. More than half of those deaths did not involve boats.

GENTRY – Northwest Arkansas fishermen celebrated the long-awaited completion of the access to SWEPCO Lake last month.

The popular fishing lake in northwest Arkansas is a largemouth bass fisherman’s paradise. The lake is cooling facility for a power-generating plant of Southwestern Electric Power Company and its warm water year round has brought bass action to anglers during even the coldest periods of the year.

Deaths resulting from recreational boating accidents fell in 2007, according to figures recently released by the United States Coast Guard. Nationally, the total dropped from 710 in 2006 to 688 in 2007, the lowest figure since 2004 and third lowest since the Coast Guard began collecting statistics specifically related to recreational boating.

Body recovered in boating mishap, search continues

The body of one of two missing DeFuniak Springs brothers, who went fishing Sunday afternoon on Choctawhatchee Bay in the Panhandle, was located today just after noon.

Searchers, including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Walton County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Coast Guard and volunteers, recovered the body of Logan Alford, 17, after combing Choctawhatchee Bay south from Alaqua Creek since late Sunday evening. Logan and Lucas Alford, 21, launched their 14-foot boat at the Alaqua Creek boat ramp around 1 p.m. Sunday.
