Ouachita River Cleanup Postponed

MALVERN – The Ouachita River Sweep, a clean-up program originally scheduled for Sept. 20 at various spots along the Ouachita River in Arkansas, has been postponed until spring 2009 because of flooding.

Over 1 Million Fish Stocked in Arkansas’s Waters

LITTLE ROCK – Arkansas Game and Fish Commission crews stocked over 1 million fish in Arkansas lakes and rivers during July, according to Mike Armstrong, chief of fisheries. The total stocking of fish weighed in excess of 55,800 pounds.

McClelland Wins 2008 Bassmaster Elite Berkley Heavyweight Award

Mike McClelland of Bella Vista, Arkansas, collected enough pounds and ounces of bass throughout the Bassmaster Elite Series season to win the 2008 Berkley Heavyweight Award. McClelland, who should finish in the top three in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year race Sunday, received $20,000 for his Berkley Heavyweight effort at the season-ending Champion's Choice presented by Ramada Worldwide on Oneida Lake out of Syracuse, N.Y.

Bighead Carp Claims Unrestricted State Record

STUTTGART - A 70-pound fish on the end of bowfishing line conjures tales of the Amazon or maybe Africa.

Greg Mitchell’s tale comes from Arkansas County.

Mitchell, of Roe, got a draw on a 70-pound, 8-ounce bighead carp July 31 and managed to land it near Wilson Bridge on Wilson Road. His fish – 51 inches from nose to tail – is the state-record bighead carp taken with unrestricted tackle.

Bass Fishing Bounces Back Along Lower Arkansas River

PENDLETON – Bass fishing on the lower portion of the Arkansas River has rebounded, as evidenced by the 2008 Big Bass Bonanza.

From an area of disappointment for anglers in the last 20 years or so, the river and its renowned tributaries and backwaters is producing much better black bass – largemouth and spotted – according to fishermen who competed in this years bonanza and according to fisheries biologists with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
