LITTLE ROCK – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is offering a new way to anonymously report outdoor-related violations to the agency’s Enforcement Division agents. It’s called tip411 and is as simple as sending a text message.

LITTLE ROCK – The bass, the trout, the crappie and even the catfish get the headlines, but bream are the most numerous of fish caught and taken home for eating by Arkansas anglers.
First, the dictionary necessities. The comprehensive term bream is pronounced "brim," like the edge of a cup. It is a category, not a specific species. Bream refers to several members of the sunfish family, a family that also includes black bass and crappie. A European fish called the bream is not connected to the Arkansas bream.

More than 109,900 pounds of fish stocked in April

LITTLE ROCK – Arkansas Game and Fish Commission crews stocked more than 181,100 fish in Arkansas lakes and rivers during April, according to Mark Oliver, chief of the Fisheries Division. The total stocking of fish weighed more than 109,900 pounds.

LITTLE ROCK – Fishing veterans can relate some unusual strategies. Crashing into brushy areas is one.
Richard Collins of Conway recalls when he and a couple of angling buddies used noise or disturbance as an asset, not a liability. "I used to fish in a little cutoff lake off the Arkansas River in the Lollie Bottoms. There was an old willow top that nearly always had crappie in it. If they weren’t biting, we would say, ’We need to wake them up.’ Then we would crank up that little 4-horse motor on the boat and run it back and forth over the willow top. Sure enough, most of the time, the crappie would start hitting."

Crooked Creek’s fishing responding to renovation work

The fishing on one of north Arkansas’s most heralded streams is on the upswing although not yet to the glory status of a few decades ago. Extensive renovation of the habitat in the Kelley’s Slab area is nearly completion, and more smiles are beginning to appear on anglers going after smallmouth bass and the other Crooked Creek denizens.

Featured Fisheries Improvement: AGFC Stream Teams recently worked to stabilize the shoreline and open a channel around Kelley’s Slab in Crooked Creek near the Fred Berry Conservation Education Center in Yellville. The project will enable fish to move freely between sections of the creek. Fish already are responding well, moving into areas of the stream along the new trees and cover used in the shoreline stabilization project. Arkie Division Getting Together on DeGray Lake
