Thirty-five newly installed highway billboards near lakes and rivers are warning Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, and Michigan boaters and anglers this summer not to pick up Aquatic Hitchhikers. In addition, signs in Minnesota at the Twin Cities International Airport, show what the invasive fugitives can look like and how to stop them before they stow-away on boats and trailers and spread to other waters. Television ads during favorite Saturday morning fishing shows are showing sportsmen how to take action against invasive species. Wanted posters in local papers are instructing residents: Wanted Dead, Not Alive.

Gov. Rounds rededicates historic State Game Lodge

Tuesday's ceremony centered on major improvements to the State Game Lodge.

Oahe Downstream to Host 3rd Annual Kids' Fishing Derby

PIERRE, S.D. - Kids can join in a morning of fun-filled fishing and prizes at Oahe Downstream Recreation Area near Fort Pierre on Saturday, June 6.
Kids are encouraged to register prior to the event at the Welcome Center at Oahe Downstream Recreation Area. Registration will close at 9:30 a.m. on June 6. Fishing will run from 10 a.m. to noon with prizes immediately following. Prizes will be awarded for the largest, smallest and most interesting catches of the morning.

In the proclamation, Gov Rounds states, for the first time in our country's history, we potentially have an entire generation growing up disconnected from nature, which makes outdoor recreation awareness especially important for our children.

GF&P Busy Stocking Public Waters

PIERRE, S.D. – A moist winter and spring have brought much-needed water to many statewide lakes, rivers and ponds, creating increased demand for fish stocking across South Dakota.

The Game Fish and Parks Department has been busy transporting fish from hatcheries, and several public-access waters.

LAKE POINSETT, S.D. – A Brookings angler is the proud owner of a South Dakota fishing record. Michael Weber was fishing in Lake Poinsett on April 6 when he landed a 5-pound, 12-ounce white sucker.

The Game, Fish and Parks Department will be hosting it's annual Free Fishing and Free Park Entrance Weekend. That means you have the opportunity to fish public waters, excluding tribal trust land, from 12:01 a.m. on Friday through midnight on Sunday without having to have a fishing license. One important thing to remember, even though you may fish without a license all other rules must be followed.

The State Game Lodge in Custer State Park underwent extensive renovations over the winter, and South Dakota State Parks' Open House Weekend, May 15-17, marks the grand reopening of the lodge.

State Park Visitation Up for Second Straight Month

PIERRE, S.D. – August visitation and camping at South Dakota’s State Parks were up significantly for the month of August putting 2008 overall visitation and overall camping ahead of last year.

Visitation increased 5% in August 2008 compared to August 2007, and camping rose an astounding 16%. “This year’s camping season started slow with cool weather this spring,” announced Doug Hofer, state parks director, “but nearly every campground in the state had an increase in August.”
