Lake Memphremagog Tomifobia River and Coaticook River Basin (Basin 17) Water Quality Management Plan
Saint Johnsbury, VT. - Thursday, the Agency of Natural Resources announced the approval of the Lake Memphremagog Tomifobia River and Coaticook River Basin (Basin 17) water quality management plan. This plan reflects years of work in the Northeast Kingdom to evaluate the health of the basin. Secretary Markowitz said, "I am proud of the work done over the past four years by our basin planner Ben Copans. His excellent work with the communities in the Northeast Kingdom who are part of these river basins has resulted in a plan that will allow Vermont to protect and improve the water quality in the area for years to come."

WAITSFIELD, Vt -- Two Burlington men pled no contest on December 23rd to taking an endangered species of fish in Addison County.

Dhan Gurung, 27, of Winooski and Kamal Pradhan, 31, from South Burlington were apprehended by game wardens in July after illegally taking a lake sturgeon from Otter Creek in Ferrisburgh. A concerned fisherman witnessed the two men catch the sturgeon and called a Vermont State Game Warden. With assistance from a Vergennes police officer, the 35-inch fish was seized and the two men were apprehended before they could leave the scene.

WATERBURY, VT -- Vermont Fish & Wildlife Commissioner Pat Berry and fisheries biologist Shawn Good took some time off from work recently and spent a day on southern Lake Champlain taking full advantage of the spring catch-and-release bass season.

The fishing has always been good in Vermont, and the last decade has been especially good to anglers in search of state record fish. Of the 33 fish species eligible for state record consideration, 14 records have been set since 2001. That number is much higher than the number of state record fish caught in any of the other New England states or New York over the same time period.

The department is reminding anglers that walleye fishing season starts in much of the state on the first Saturday in May, the 7th this year, and that regulations vary, depending on the water you are fishing.
