Burbot Bash Should Help Fish in Flaming Gorge

Two state wildlife agencies, four chambers of commerce and the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area are joining forces to fight an unwelcome invader in Flaming Gorge Reservoir.

The culprit is an illegally stocked fish known as a burbot or ling, a freshwater cod native to waters east of the Continental Divide.

St. George -- A surprise was waiting for boaters who entered Utah from Arizona on the morning of May 13.

They were required to pull off of Interstate 15 at the port of entry just south of St. George. Then biologists and law enforcement officers with the Division of Wildlife Resources inspected their boats and personal watercraft for quagga mussels.

PRICE, UT—Scofield Reservoir is on the verge of losing its ice cap. As of April 3rd, there was three feet of open water that ringed the shoreline. Another patch of open water was observed on the south end. If temperatures continue to climb, the ice could be off before mid-April.

Some of the best fishing you'll experience all year is happening right now at Lake Powell in southern Utah.

Wayne Gustaveson, lead aquatic biologist for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources at Lake Powell, says fishing for striped bass is hot in the Bullfrog portion of the lake right now. For example, an angler Gustaveson knows and that angler's friend caught 100 stripers in the 2- to 3-pound range during the first week in January.
