East Texas appeared to have dodged a bullet by this Tuesday, as thousands of evacuees returned to their homes, hundreds of Texas game wardens prepared to de-mobilize and several state parks that had closed prepared to reopen in the wake of Hurricane Gustav’s passage.

Lake Conroe, Texas - The Toyota Texas Bass Classic (TTBC), a unique team angling competition featuring the top professional anglers in the world, will be held at Lake Conroe, Texas in 2009. It will take place over Memorial Day weekend, May 22 - 24 and will adhere to strict slot limits that set it apart from other events. The event will benefit the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and its outdoor recreation programs.

HOUSTON — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission on Aug. 21 approved $10 million in competitive parks and recreation grants for city and county parks and other sites across the state. Grant project descriptions are listed by county below.

NORTH SABINE
Redfish are good in the marsh on small topwaters. Trout have been taken in the middle of the lake under birds.

SOUTH SABINE
Trout are good on live shad around the Louisiana shoreline. Trout, redfish and jack crevalle are good around the jetty on live bait and topwaters.

ALAN HENRY
Water lightly stained; 84 degrees; 0.16' low. Black bass are good on buzzbaits, spinnerbaits and large blue fleck soft plastic worms fished along timber lines. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs.

10.9-Mile Trail is A First in the DFW Metoplex

City and state officials will dedicate the new 10.9 mile Lake Arlington Paddling Trail at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 at Richard W. Simpson Park in Arlington, marking the first Texas Paddling Trail on a lake and the first in Dallas/Fort Worth or any other urban area. Richard Simpson Park is located at 6300 W. Arkansas Lane.

BRYAN, Texas—There was a time when Lake Conroe was the perfect example of Mark Twain’s comment that “water is for fighting over.”

During the 1980s the 21,000-acre reservoir just north of Houston was the scene of a bitter battle over how to control hydrilla, an exotic plant that invaded the lake to such an extent it hampered boating and recreational use of the lake.

NORTH SABINE
Trout are good in the river on live shad and shrimp. Redfish are good in the marsh on small topwaters, and in the middle of the lake under birds. Few anglers braved the weather as Tropical Storm Edouard came ashore.

ALAN HENRY
Water lightly stained; 85 degrees; .23' low. Black bass are good on white buzzbaits early and late in day, and white/blue spinnerbaits and black/chartreuse jigs along timber lines. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs.
