Winter Anglers Reminded to be Courteous

A year ago, much of North Dakota was covered with four feet of snow, a prelude to record depths that prevented ice fishing access to many lakes throughout the state. And now, with above average snow cover, some areas are beginning to experience access problems similar to last year.

Anglers kept off North Dakota lakes last winter because of record snowfall are finding access to frozen waters much easier so far this year.
Robert Timian, enforcement chief for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, said many anglers are taking advantage of this year’s improved travel conditions. “There already has been a flurry of ice fishing activity, especially in the eastern half of the state,” Timian said. “With that said, anglers need to be reminded that unoccupied fish houses left on the ice must be identified.”

While November was kind to North Dakota’s hunters, unseasonably mild temperatures did little to help usher in the ice fishing season. Knowing this, winter anglers are encouraged to use caution and allow ice to harden significantly before venturing on state waters.
