PISGAH FOREST, N.C. - The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will offer a special fly-fishing weekend for women through the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program on March 9-11 in the mountains.

Activities will be held at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and Davidson River Campground, south of Asheville near Brevard in Transylvania County. The registration fee is $125, with partial scholarships available.

Free Kids Fishing Events Under Way this Weekend

RALEIGH, N.C. - More than 35 free, family oriented fishing events get under way this weekend, as part of 2011 National Fishing and Boating Week.

Supported by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, in cooperation with Neuse Sport Shop, North Carolina State Council of Trout Unlimited, Bass Pro Shops and the U.S. Forest Service, these fishing events provide opportunities for young anglers to learn fishing basics, such as casting, knot-tying and tackle selection. They also let young anglers try their luck at reeling in a variety of freshwater fish, many of them stocked by the Commission, including trout in the mountains and channel catfish in the Piedmont and Coastal regions.

Boaters Reminded of Safety Requirements and Responsibilities

RALEIGH, N.C. - Wildlife Officers with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission are reminding everyone to comply with the state's boating safety laws this summer.

Wildlife Officers are charged with enforcing the boating laws and regulations on the waters of North Carolina, and may stop any vessel for safety checks or violations. In the course of their duties, these law enforcement officers patrol over 5,000 square miles of inland streams, rivers, lakes and coastal waterways, and 220 public boating access areas.

Free Kids' Fishing Events Scheduled for May, Early June

RALEIGH, N.C. - Kids can fish for free and register to win prizes, including two lifetime licenses, at one of 43 kids' fishing events conducted across the state in late May and early June.

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, in cooperation with Neuse Sport Shop, Trout Unlimited, Bass Pro Shops and the U.S. Forest Service, is supporting these fishing events as part of National Fishing and Boating Week 2011.

Renovated Craven County (NC) Ramp Opens

RALEIGH, N.C. - The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has completed renovations on the Spring Garden Boating Access Area, which is now open to the public.

The site, on the Neuse River, has new docks and bulkhead and improvements to the parking lot. Workers also replaced a fishing pier.

Renovations to Cape Fear River Boating Access Area Complete

RALEIGH, N.C. - The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has completed renovations to the Castle Hayne Boating Access Area, which is now open to the public.

Renovations include a paved parking lot, new docks and ramps and a new fishing pier. The renovated site was paid for through funds from the Sport Fish Restoration Program and motorboat registration receipts.

WHAT: Boater Keith Kirby of Gaffney, S.C., caught a five-bass limit weighing 16 pounds, 11 ounces, April 16 to win $4,244 in the BFL North Carolina Division tournament on Lake Wylie. He was using crankbaits to catch his limit.

Carolina Kingfish Contest Contributes to RFA

The Onslow Bay Open King Mackerel Tournament Committee, Swansboro, N. C., announces that they will be donating $10 of each paid entry at their 11th Annual Southern Kingfish Association sanctioned king mackerel tournament on August 13, 2011 to the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA). Hatchery-Supported Trout Waters Open April 2

RALEIGH, N.C.- The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will open approximately 1,100 miles of hatchery-supported trout waters in 25 western counties at 7 a.m. on April 2. The season will run until one-half hour after sunset on Feb. 28, 2012.
