New Jersey Outdoors for Women - October 4 - 9:00am - 4:00pm
Island Beach State Park, Seaside Park, NJ

Surf Fishing Clinic - (No surf fishing experience needed.) Open to women only at least 18 years old. All equipment and bait will be provided. Participants will learn the basics of surf fishing, including information on rods, reels, weights, line, tackle, knots, bait, fish identification, casting, reading the surf, and caring for your catch. The afternoon will be spent on the beach using techniques learned to fish the surf. The workshop will take place rain or shine, warm or cold. Participants should be prepared with appropriate clothing, as well as other convenience items such as sun screen, sunglasses, hat, and foul weather gear.

Fall Trout Information Available

Information on the 2008 fall trout stocking program has been posted on the NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife website. This fall marks the third year of stocking only big, two-year old trout. In addition to these large trout, even older and larger broodstock fish will also be stocked again for the fall season. This adds up to 21,000 trout measuring 14 - 21 inches and weighing 1½ to 5 pounds for New Jersey fall trout anglers. These trout will be stocked in 16 streams and 16 lakes throughout the state over a two week period in October .

ASMFC Shad and River Herring Board Releases Draft River Herring Amendment for Public Comment and Review

Alexandria, VA - The Commission's Shad & River Herring Management Board has approved sending forward Draft Amendment 2 to the Interstate Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for River Herring for public review and comment. It seeks input on proposed requirements for population and bycatch monitoring, as well as commercial and recreational management measures. It is anticipated that the majority of coastal states will be conducting public meetings on the Draft Amendment; information on those meetings will be released once they become finalized.

Temporary Suspension of Shellfish Harvest in Delaware Bay

The Department of Environmental Protection has temporarily suspended shellfish harvesting from a portion of the Delaware Bay after state health officials confirmed two cases of illness from Vibrio parahaemolyticus linked to oysters harvested from those New Jersey waters.

SYRACUSE, New York - New Jersey's Kyle Harrigan, 18, and New Mexico's Jordan McMorris, 15, won their respective age divisions Saturday at the Junior Bassmaster World Championship on New York's Onondaga Lake. The event was held in conjunction with the final Bassmaster Elite Series event of the season, which was staged on New York's Oneida Lake, and the pair of teenagers took home $5,000 each in scholarships and a Triton boat package.

Coastal Workshop Registration Deadline August 15

The registration deadline of August 15th is quickly approaching for a special "Becoming an Outdoors-Woman" Coastal workshop scheduled for September 5 - 7, 2008, at the Grand Hotel in Cape May.

The BOW workshop is directed toward women yet is an opportunity for anyone 18 years or older who wishes to learn new outdoor skills, improve existing skills and enhance their appreciation of the outdoors. This workshop is designed for those who have never tried these activities and hope for an opportunity to learn; are beginners who hope to improve their skills; have some outdoor experience and would like to expand their abilities; and are excited to meet other outdoor enthusiasts. Participants will have opportunities to experience a variety of activities including surf, bay, kayak or deep sea fishing, orienteering, snorkeling, birding, crabbing and clamming, archery, falconry, seafood preparation and much more.
