River Herring and Tautog Regulation Changes

New Jersey Fishing NewsThe NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife is informing recreational saltwater anglers and commercial fishermen of recent regulatory changes for river herring and tautog fisheries. These actions were taken to comply with Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) management plans for river herring and tautog.

State Record Grass Carp Caught

New Jersey Fishing NewsThe NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has confirmed that a Grass Carp caught by James Dempsey, Jr of Ewing New Jersey on May 12, 2011 is officially a new state record. The huge fish was taken from Curlis Lake in Mercer County and weighed an astounding 55 lbs. 8 oz., surpassing the previous record set in 2008 by Homer Tye by one pound, one ounce. That record fish was also from Curlis Lake.
Black Sea Bass Season Opens Saturday, May 28

DEP Commissioner Bob Martin signed the new regulations on May 25, 2011.

Hackettstown Hatchery Provides Three Millionth Fish to Combat Mosquitos

New Jersey Fishing NewsIn addition to providing game fish for the sporting public, the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife's Hackettstown Hatchery has been involved in the fight against mosquitos for the past 20 years. The program is supported by the state Mosquito Control Commission and the Bureau of Fresh Water Fisheries, which raises the fish that are used as bio control agents.
Great Egg Reef Concrete Deployment Rescheduled to May 27

New Jersey Fishing NewsThe NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has rescheduled the deployment of 6000 cubic yards of demolition concrete on the Great Egg Reef to May 27, 2011. Bad weather forced a postponement from the original date of April 22. The deployment is part of the Division's Artificial Reef Program which provides habitat for structure dependent fishes, creates fishing grounds for hook and line anglers, and creates attractions for scuba divers.
NJ Saltwater Registry Now Available

This registry allows New Jersey to comply with a federal mandate to have a system in place to collect better data from recreational anglers and better manage fishery resources, at the same time exempting anglers from fees and keeping saltwater fishing in New Jersey free.
Trout Stocking Rescheduled for Four Waters
