VENICE, Neb. – Nebraska anglers will have more opportunity than ever before to catch trout from the Two Rivers State Recreation Area’s popular trout lake near Venice when it opens at 7 a.m. March 15, rather than on April 1.

Panhandle

Anglers may be able to continue ice fishing through a good part of March. There was 16-20 inches of ice on the reservoirs.

Ice fishermen probably will continue catching northern pike and bluegill along the beds of vegetation at Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area (SRA) near Hemingford. Then, at ice-out, probably in late March, they should start catching northern pike.

In the Panhandle, fish Box Butte Reservoir for bluegill, using tip-ups with wax\ worm teardrops, and northern pike. Smith Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a good spot for bluegill, largemouth bass, and northern pike. Fish for rainbow trout, largemouth bass and crappie at Fort Robinson State Park's (SP) Carter P. Johnson Lake.

Big game seasons are closed, but sportsmen still have winter hunting opportunities in Nebraska. Squirrel, pheasant, quail and partridge seasons ended Jan. 31, but cottontail and jackrabbit seasons are open through Feb. 29.

The idea for Outdoorsman Exchange came about in an instant, but in a way it was sometime in the making – we just didn’t realize it at the time.

For years my husband, Paul, has wanted to go on an elk hunt. I’ve encouraged him many times. He and his brothers talk how they should all go elk hunting out west with their Dad before age took its toll on him. Pursuit of that dream sounded good but there was always the financial reality check that held my husband back. He couldn’t justify spending money on a guided hunting trip and felt a guided trip was the only way to go for a successful hunt. This voice inside kept telling him - we need to save money for more sensible things like kids braces, college funds, etc. Most everyone can relate to these thoughts, unless you’re an heir to a fortune.

Numerous ponds have been constructed in Nebraska, most in the eastern third of the state. Although many of them provide good fishing, some do not because of improper construction, management, or conflicting uses. Ponds need to have good water quality, favorable aquatic habitat, and proper management in order to develop balanced fish populations that will achieve desired angling goals. It is also crucial that ponds have adequate water depths to prevent excessive growth of aquatic vegetation and to support aquatic life when adverse environmental conditions occur.

Angler Recognition Certificate Program

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has initiated a new program where individuals wishing to commemorate a special fishing experience can do so with a web-generated Recognition Certificate.

These certificates are designed especially with our youth anglers in mind who have taken their first fish. Other individuals who wish to produce a certificate are also welcome to participate in the program. CLICK HERE for a sample certificate.

Final Phase of Bowling Lake Project to Begin

LINCOLN, Neb. – The final phase of the Bowling Lake rehabilitation project in Lincoln will begin in a few weeks, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

The project will include additional excavation, shoreline reshaping and stabilization, a new land connection to the island and a new pump with a filter in Oak Creek to fill the lake. Related work will include improving angler access along the lake’s shoreline and improving the boat ramp.
