White River's rebound continues

The White River has received its cleanest bill of health since a major fish kill in 1999.

During a fall 2011 fish survey, Indiana Department of Natural Resources biologists collected 7,128 fish from 57 species at sample stations between Anderson and Indianapolis. This was the greatest number of species collected since the fish kill, and further proof that the river has recovered.

Bass limit back in effect at two Noble County, IN lakes

COLUMBIA CITY - A 14-inch minimum size limit on largemouth bass goes back into effect Thursday, Sept. 1, at Big and Crane lakes in Noble County.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources had temporarily modified the limit in June to allow anglers to catch and keep bass that were 10 to 14 inches long. DNR biologists had determined that both lakes were overpopulated with small bass. The size limit was reduced to encourage anglers to take home small bass.

Portage gains Clean Marina designation

The Portage Public Marina has been designated as a Clean Marina by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the fourth such designation in the Hoosier State's Lake Michigan region.

The Indiana Clean Marina Program is a voluntary program that encourages marina operators and recreational boaters to protect water quality and habitat by engaging in environmentally sound operating and maintenance practices. To receive the designation, marinas must implement a high number of best management practices recommended in the DNR's Indiana Clean Marina Guidebook that apply to their facility.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Monroe April 30 for the first of five stops in the Hoosier Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.

Hovey and Dogwood lakes open to more boaters

More boaters can use Hovey Lake and Dogwood Lake now.

The horsepower limit on the size of outboard motor permitted has been removed. Now, boaters with 10-horsepower motors and larger are allowed on the two lakes, located in Hovey Lake (Posey County) and Glendale (Daviess County) fish & wildlife areas, respectively.

Boaters Urged to Avoid Ohio River for "Thunder Over Louisville" Event

Indiana conservation officers are encouraging boaters to stay off the Ohio River for Saturday's Thunder Over Louisville event due to predicted high water and potentially dangerous conditions.

The National Weather Service forecasts the water level at McAlpine Dam's upper pool will be over 24 feet by Friday, putting the area at flood stage and creating strong, unpredictable currents and flooding in low-lying areas.

Indiana Families Can Learn to Fish Starting April 16

Family Learn to Fish workshops will be offered on the third Saturday of most months at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis, beginning April 16.

The workshops, which run from 9 a.m. to noon, offer families the chance to learn to fish, both in a classroom and while fishing on Delaware Lake, aided by expert instructors. The DNR's Go FishIN program provides fishing gear and bait. All workshop fishing is catch-and-release.

COLUMBIA CITY - Anglers could catch more walleyes than ever before at two northeast Indiana lakes this spring.

According to the DNR Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW), Sylvan Lake in Rome City and Winona Lake in Warsaw contain two of the highest walleye densities in the region.

Indiana plans to keep boat ramps on Manitou open this year

More boaters can use Lake Manitou this year.

The DNR has no plans to temporarily close boat ramps, something it's done for spring/summer portions of the past four years.

The reason for the closures has been the presence of hydrilla, an exotic, highly invasive plant, and the need to contain the plant to this one body of water. The plant was first confirmed as being in the lake in August 2006.
