Remember the massive fish kill in the White River? In this, the 10th anniversary year of that event, the March-April issue of Outdoor Indiana magazine, which will be on newsstands this week, shows how the recovery has made the river a fishing destination again.

Ice Fishing Derby and Family Fishing Fair

Anglers of all ages are welcome to visit Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site on Sylvan Lake Feb. 6 for the inaugural Ice Fishing Derby and Family Fishing Fair from 6 to 11 a.m.
Participants are invited to take part in the competitive ice fishing event, as well as several other family-friendly activities. Ice anglers of all skill levels are welcome to compete. Prizes will be awarded in multiple categories, and participants can have fish identified by DNR Fish & Wildlife experts.

2010 Karl E. Kelley Memorial Youth Camp

Indiana Conservation Officers run the camp June 20-26 at Ross Camp in Tippecanoe County.

Round Lake project starting, property closing temporarily

A much-awaited construction project will start this week at Round Lake Wetland Conservation Area in Starke County, temporarily closing the facility to the public.
The 140-acre property is managed by Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area.

Another successful year for state park deer hunts

Volunteer hunters helped the effort to restore habitat during the recent controlled hunts at 17 Indiana state parks, taking a total of 1,334 deer.
The controlled hunts took place Nov. 16 - 17 and Nov. 30 - Dec. 1 at Chain O'Lakes, Charlestown, Harmonie, Lincoln, Ouabache, Pokagon, Potato Creek, Prophetstown, Shades, Shakamak, Spring Mill, Tippecanoe River, Turkey Run, Versailles, Whitewater Memorial, Fort Harrison, and Clifty Falls.

MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 24, 2009) - The National Guard FLW College Fishing Central Regional Championship took place on the famed waters of Kentucky Lake in Murray, Ky. Indiana University students Dustin Vaal and Jesse Schultz started the three-day tournament by targeting schooling bass, a popular fall technique on Kentucky Lake. But they quickly learned schoolers can be feast or famine.

Lake Patoka To Host Walmart Bass Fishing League Hoosier Division Tournament

JASPER, INDIANA - The Hoosier Division of the $8 million Walmart Bass Fishing League® will visit Lake Patoka in Jasper, Indiana, July 25 for the fourth of five regular-season events. As many as 200 boaters and 200 co-anglers are expected to compete in the tournament, which will award as much as $45,000 in cash, including a top award of $6,000 in the Boater Division.

Indiana DNR's Lake Michigan Coastal Program Supports Local Projects

Indiana's Lake Michigan coastal area will benefit from the approval of 14 projects to receive $635,232 in federal funds, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources

The grant recipients will provide the equivalent in local match for a total of $1,270,464 that will be invested in projects that will improve public access and protect and restore natural areas in the Lake Michigan watershed.

Indiana Finds Unwanted Pike and White Bass in Lakes

COLUMBIA CITY, Indiana - Two species of fish, although popular among Hoosier anglers, are not what biologists wanted to find in three lakes north of Columbia City in Whitley County.

In mid-June, two northern pike were netted at Loon Lake and a white bass was captured in Big Lake during fish surveys conducted by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Volunteers needed for Hoosier Outdoor Experience

The inaugural Hoosier Outdoor Experience (Sept. 26-27, at Fort Harrison State Park in Indianapolis) will give people a hands-on chance to try many outdoor activities.
In order to make the event a success, the Department of Natural Resources needs volunteers in four categories: hospitality, ambassador, first aid and shuttle attendant.
