IFA Redfish Tour, IFA Kayak Tour coming to Destin

LIZELLA, Ga. (March 11, 2010) - Anglers from across Florida and surrounding regions will converge on Destin, Fla., on March 13-14 for the first Gulf Coast Division regular-season openers for both the IFA Redfish Tour Presented by Cabela's and the IFA Kayak FishingTour Presented by Hobie Fishing. Saturday's IFA Redfish Tour event, which will launch from Legendary Marine and Sunday's IFA Kayak Fishing Tour, are the first of three regular-season tournaments for the Gulf Coast Division, one of six divisions of IFA Tour events running from the Carolinas to Texas.

Proposed Rule Change Would Change Status of Georgia's Nesting Sea Turtles

BRUNSWICK, GEORGIA - A proposed change in the conservation status of loggerhead sea turtles would mean more protection for the most frequently encountered sea turtle on Georgia's coast.

NOAA's Fisheries Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced on March 10 that changes were warranted following a recent global assessment of loggerheads. The review also determined that the global population of Caretta caretta is comprised of nine distinct population segments that would qualify as separate populations for listing as either endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

BFL Bulldog anglers set to tangle with Lake Sinclair

MILLEDGEVILLE Ga. (Feb. 24, 2010) - The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Sinclair, March 6 for the first of five stops in the Bulldog Division series. As many as 400 pro and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively.

Georgia accepting written comments on shark fishing regulations

Brunswick, GA (Jan 29, 2010) -The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is currently accepting written public comments on a proposal to amend the Rules of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Saltwater Fishing Regulations. The proposed amended Rule, when adopted, will prohibit recreational shark fishing with any gear other than rod and reel and handline, with handline defined in the proposed rule. Also any dealer buying or selling sharks caught in state waters will be required to purchase a federal Commercial Shark Dealer Permit. These proposed amendments are required for Georgia to remain in compliance with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic Coastal Sharks.

Body of Missing Duck Hunter Found

A body found in the Apalachicola River Sunday night is that of missing Albany, Ga. hunter John Mark Slappey.

The medical examiner's office in Tallahassee confirmed the identity of the body late Monday. Slappey, 34, was duck hunting Dec. 20 in a float tube near the Jim Woodruff Dam when a strong current swept him through an open lock and he disappeared beneath the water.

(Sept. 19, 2009) - Tom Mann, Jr. of Buford, Ga., claimed the Land O'Lakes Angler of the Year title Saturday at the conclusion of the Walmart FLW BP Eastern Series event presented by Folgers on Clarks Hill Lake. The Angler of the Year title annually goes to the FLW BP Eastern Series Pro Division angler who has the highest year-end point total in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season. Mann, Jr. secured the crown on Clarks Hill Lake with 20 bass weighing 51 pounds, 2 ounces at what was the final FLW Series qualifying event of the season in a race that was won by a mere one point and went down to the last day of the regular season.

LIZELLA, GEORGIA- David "Boola" Mills and Brent Ballay, both of Venice, Louisiana, weighed in a two-redfish limit totaling 16.59 pounds to win the 2009 IFA Redfish Tour event at Grand Isle, Louisiana, on Saturday. To win the one-day event, which launched out of Bridgeside Marina, Mills and Ballay bested a field of other two-angler teams to win the final regular-season event in the Louisiana Division.

Monster Flathead Caught on Georgia's Ocmulgee River

SOCIAL CIRCLE, GEORGIA - The Ocmulgee River has monsters - monster catfish that is! A 103-lbs. flathead catfish was caught by Mr. Tom Head, age 76, near Warner Robins earlier this week, according to fisheries personnel with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division. The fish was more than 57 inches long and greater than 41 inches in girth. The head itself was almost 16 inches wide.

LIZELLA, GEORGIA - Bob Looper and Rick Walters, both of Brooksville, Florida, caught a two-redfish limit that weighed 13.23 pounds to win the 2009 IFA Redfish Tour event at Englewood, Florida, on June 27. To win the one-day event, which launched out of Stump Pass Marina, Looper and Walters bested a field of other two-angler teams to win the event, adding 200 points to their IFA Florida West Coast Division point total.

SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (June 26, 2009) - Angler Terry McConnell of Toccoa, Georgia had more than just a great day of fishing on Lake Richard B. Russell on April 3, 2009 - he managed to catch a fish that tied a Georgia state record! McConnell reeled in a 63 lbs., 49 ½ -inch striped bass using a blueback herring on a baitcast rod, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division. This catch ties the current striped bass state record, which was caught from the Oconee River in 1967.
