Crappie USA Inc., "America's Premier National Crappie Fishing Tournament Organization" will return to Alabama's Weiss Lake "The Crappie Capital of the World" March 3, 2012. Anglers will be fishing for a 7-fish limit of crappie, which could net them a check along with the opportunity to advance to the Cabela's Crappie USA Classic, the most prestigious event in crappie fishing today. This year's classic will be held October 24th-27th, 2012 on the Barkley/Kentucky Lakes at Cadiz, Kentucky.

Jackson Middle School Physical Education Teacher Cindy Garrett wanted to teach her Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grade girls another sport that would keep them active now and in the future. Recently, Garrett worked with Doug Darr, Aquatic Education Coordinator with the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF), to provide training in the Hooked on Fishing - Not on Drugs program (HOFNOD). While at the Clarke County school, Darr taught casting to each of the young women.

Forty to seventy-pound amberjacks are coming to the docks every day on Alabama's Gulf Coast, and limits of flounder also are being landed daily on the Gulf State Park Pier in Gulf Shores, Alabama. "To catch the really-big amberjacks, we're fishing with live baits like pinfish, ruby-lipped grunts and any-other type of live bait we can catch." says Captain Dick Cappar of the charter boat "Traveler" (www.travelerfishingcharters.com, 251-747-1886, 251-583-6367). "Amberjacks out of Orange Beach, Ala., are loaded-up on the natural bottom as well as on the army tanks, Liberty ships, barges and boats that have been sunk to make artificial reefs. I pulled-up on one spot in mid-August where before we started fishing, 60 to 70 amberjacks came up in the water right behind the boat. Although we put out our live baits, those big jacks wouldn't eat the live bait.

FLORENCE, Alabama - Castrol pro David Dudley of Lynchburg, Virginia, wrapped up his season-long quest for the Walmart FLW Tour Angler of the Year title Sunday at the FLW Tour event presented by AMP Energy on Pickwick Lake. Dudley, who received $100,000 for the title, joins fellow FLW Tour anglers Clark Wendlandt (2009, 2000,1997) and Jay Yelas (2007, 2002) as the only anglers to win multiple Walmart FLW Tour Angler of the Year titles. Dudley's first title came in 2008.

DECATUR, Ala. - It was no surprise on Sunday when 25-year-old Ott DeFoe of Knoxville, Tenn., was declared the 2011 Bassmaster Rookie of the Year.

Anyone who had even casually tracked DeFoe's first year in the Bassmaster Elite Series knew that he wasn't a typical rookie. His strong performances all year pointed to the fact that he'd pick up the top-rookie trophy at season's end.

More Arrest Warrants in Mobile-Area Waterborne Theft Ring

A joint investigation into the second-largest waterborne theft ring to operate out of the Mobile area in the past 20 years has led to more arrest warrants. The investigation began on May 24th when Alabama Marine Police and Saraland Police Detectives received a tip on two stolen personal watercraft (PWC) at Young's Towing on Shelton Beach Road in Saraland. The tip led to three suspects in the burglary and theft of equipment worth $4,000 from the Blakely State Park Tour Boat the "Delta Explorer."

Two largemouth bass and a bluegill (bream) cast three Alabama students into the winner's circle of the 2011 Wildlife Forever State-Fish Art Contest. The Alabama winners are: 6th grader Hannah Walton from Barbara Keel Art School in Auburn, largemouth bass; 8th grader Sam Darring from St. Patrick School in Robersdale, bluegill; and senior Christina Rhodes from Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School in Montgomery, largemouth bass. The Alabama winners were chosen from thousands of entries submitted by students nationwide.
