KA-BAR Goes Extreme With New Knives

Outdoor News

Olean, NY-KA-BAR® Knives has announced a line of knives aimed at extreme users such as hog hunters, adventure trekkers, and anyone else looking for a knife that is over the top. Johnson ADVENTURE™ Blade knives are based on designs by Steve Johnson, Field Editor for Boar Hunter Magazine, adrenaline junkie, and part-time knife designer. Johnson has been quietly building small numbers of purpose-built, one-off knives for hunting and military applications since his teenage years.

KA-BAR® will be offering three Adventure™ brand knives in 2010. The Baconmaker™ is the most aggressive knife in the line. The original was built for a friend in the Special Operations community and designed for sticking things, with no concern of it ever breaking. The spirit of that design comes through in the Baconmaker™. With a 7-1/8" 1095 cro-van recurve blade, it has Persian influence and is built to provide a very ergonomically sound underhand thrust. The recurved blade also cuts exceptionally well in slashing situations. This knife goes through boar shields like the proverbial hot knife through butter; we tried it. The handle is large enough for the biggest hands, but designed to fit smaller hands as well and gives the average hand multiple methods of manipulating the knife. The handle is textured with our new Adventuregrip™.

The second model is the Potbelly™. The Potbelly™ is a hard working knife that no camper or adventure trekker should be without. It has a 7-1/8" long, ¼" thick, 1095 cro-van blade that is hollow ground to a razor edge with a deep belly and weight forward balance that rivals hatchets in terms of chopping power. With some influence from the kukri and machete, the Potbelly™ is best described as what you get if you crossed a scalpel and a sledgehammer. The Potbelly™ is a controllable big knife. Its multi-position handle is textured with our proprietary Adventuregrip™ so you can easily control it for tasks as delicate as field dressing if necessary. If you only have room for one knife in your pack and need one that will do it all, the Potbelly™ is your knife.

The Piggyback™ is the smallest knife in the line....but it doesn't know that. The Piggyback™ is purpose-built for field dressing game from upland birds to big, nasty hogs and everything in between. Its simple skeleton design is very easy to clean up and it is made of high carbon stainless steel so keeping an edge on it is easy. It has a deep belly and an abrupt clip point that is perfect for unzipping skin from forelegs and other critical areas when caping out a trophy. The Piggyback™ is all about toughness, simplicity and ease of use. It comes standard with the Baconmaker™ and Potbelly™ but is also sold separately.

The Baconmaker™ and Potbelly™ utilize an ingenious new sheath system that has any carry need covered. With belt loops at two different belt carry heights and multiple MOLLE attachment points the Adventure sheath is designed for ease of carry. In addition to carrying and protecting these two big knives, the Adventure sheath also has an integral sheath to carry the Piggyback™. A stuff sack on the front of the sheath is also handy for carrying latex gloves, fishing gear, light sticks, water purification tablets or anything else your adventure requires.

Both big knives come standard with the Adventure sheath, a Piggyback™, and 8 feet of Adventurecord™
