Gov. Rounds rededicates historic State Game Lodge
CUSTER STATE PARK, S.D. - Gov. Mike Rounds has rededicated a landmark building in the South Dakota state park system.
Tuesday's ceremony centered on major improvements to the State Game Lodge.
Built in 1922 as part of Gov. Peter Norbeck's vision for Custer State Park, the Lodge has been a destination for South Dakotans and other visitors for nearly 90 years.
An extensive renovation project was done over the winter. The State Game Lodge now features an easily accessible public entrance, expanded gift shop, new dining area, and exterior improvements.
During the rededication ceremony, the Governor noted the importance of the Game Lodge to South Dakota residents and the state's tourism industry.
"The State Game Lodge is an important part of the quality of life for South Dakotans. As kids, it was our family's favorite vacation spot," Gov. Rounds said. "It's where we take our family now. We're proud of it. It's a part of who we are.
"As one of the anchors of the Black Hills attractions, the Game Lodge also boosts the state's economy, bringing millions of visitors to our state to wonder at the area's spectacular beauty. The Game Lodge project is the perfect symbol of our optimism for a continued strong tourism industry in South Dakota."
The project was carefully designed and implemented to preserve the integrity of the historic structure while still meeting the expectations of visitors. The $2.7 million project was the last of $12 million in park improvements paid for over three years through bonding authorized by the South Dakota Legislature.
"This project ensures a future tradition of family vacations, fine dining, and accessibility," Gov. Rounds said. "This investment in the future is what led me to introduce the bond issue that funded these improvements to the State Game Lodge."
Rounds thanked legislators, the state Game, Fish and Parks Commission, the CSP Resort Co., and GF&P staff for their partnerships and work on the project.
Also speaking at the event were State Parks Director Doug Hofer, GF&P Commission Chairman Spencer Hawley, Custer State Park Superintendent Richard Miller, Regency CSP Ventures partner Paul VanBockern and Regency CSP Ventures Operations Director Josh Schmaltz.
Regency CSP Ventures operates the State Game Lodge under a concession agreement with GF&P.
