Pennsylvania Fishing News

Howard, PA - The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission recently participated in the 26th Pennsylvania State Envirothon event that was held at Bald Eagle State Park in Centre County on Tuesday, May 19. High school students from 65 Pennsylvania counties participated in this year’s event.

The Envirothon gives students the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate knowledge of environmental resources and their connection to each other and human activities. Students are challenged in the areas of aquatic ecology, forestry, soil and land use, wildlife and a current environmental issue. The Commission provides resources and prizes, develops objectives and tests and administers the Aquatic station at 67 county events and the state event each year.

The 2009 Pennsylvania State Envirothon champions are from Penncrest High School in Delaware County. The team also scored highest with a perfect score of 100 in the Commission’s Aquatic Station. Team members include: Alex Senko, Elizabeth Freeburg, Katie Davis, Katie Ferguson, and Jennifer Walker. The team advisors were Mark Samilenko and Amanda Meltz.

The Penncrest High School team will go on to represent the Commonwealth at the 22nd Canon Envirothon North American competition planned for August at the University of North Carolina in Asheville.

More information about the event and program can be found by visiting the Envirothon’s website at www.envirothonpa.org. Information about the Commission’s involvement in the program can also be found on the Learning Center page at www.fish.state.pa.us.
