State Record Fish Landed
LAKE POINSETT, S.D. – A Brookings angler is the proud owner of a South Dakota fishing record. Michael Weber was fishing in Lake Poinsett on April 6 when he landed a 5-pound, 12-ounce white sucker.
Weber was using a jig and Twister Tail when he foul-hooked the 23-inch fish. The fish qualifies for the unrestricted record category.
The old unrestricted record white sucker was arrowed by Marlyn Wiebelhaus on June 7, 2006 and weighed 4lbs 8oz.
If an angler thinks a catch may be a state record, the angler must get the fish weighed on a certified scale, have the species verified by a fisheries biologist or ichthyologist, and fill out a form that can be found at: http://www.sdgfp.info/Wildlife/fishing/StateRecordFishForm.pdf.
