Live Bait Fishing Strategies

As fishing season begins in most areas of the United States I figured that it was the perfect time to discuss some live bait fishing strategies that will help any angler catch more fish. When the term 'live bait fishing' is uttered, it usually means either live worm or live minnow fishing. These are the two most popular firms of live bait used in freshwater. No matter what type of live bait you choose to use, this article will help you be a more successful angler.

Let begin with the scents that might be present on our hands. This is an often overlooked aspect of live bait fishing, and one that's very important. Any unnatural scents that are on your hands (such as gasoline from gassing up your car) will transfer to your bait and cost you bites. There is no question that unnatural scents on your live bait will cost you bites. This is why making sure that your hands are free of any unnatural odors is so important. The best way to accomplish this is by grabbing a handful of grass or dirt before baiting up and rubbing it into your hands. This simple act will eliminate this problem.

The next thing to consider is you fishing line. The more visible your fishing line is, the more likely it is that the fish will see it. If the fish detect your fishing line, they are that much less apt to bite. This is especially true when fishing with live bait, and even truer when fishing in clear water. Make sure that you always use fishing line that's as thin as you can get away with when fishing with live bait.

The next strategy is to always make sure that you're on the water when the fish are the most active. This is accomplished by paying attention to the weather and moon. These two forces of Mother Nature have an incredible impact on the feeding activity of fish. The better that you understand how these two forces of Mother Nature affect fishing, the more successful you will be. Pay attention to the weather and moon and you'll always be on the water at the most opportune times.

The final live bait fishing strategy that I have for you is to always present your live bait in the most natural way possible. This is accomplished by employing something called gang hooks. You se, gang hooks are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem, thus enabling live bait to be presented in a totally natural manner. This is especially true when fishing with live worms. A live worm rigged on a set of pre-tied gang hooks is a deadly live bait fishing strategy. Gang hooks allow you to present live worms in an outstretched and natural manner, which makes a big difference in bite rates.

Begin employing one or all of these strategies sooner, rather than later and you will begin enjoying much more success when it comes to fishing with live bait. Hey, what's the worst that could happen? You just wasted five minutes reading this article? That's the worst. On the flip side, you'll begin having more fishing success.
