KIKIAOLA SMALL BOAT HARBOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECT TO START SOON

Boating News | Hawaii Fishing News
KEKAHA, KAUA‘I – The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is notifying boaters that construction work at the Kikiaola small boat harbor is expected to start in mid-June 2008.

Initially, a minimum of one-half of the entrance channel will remain open at all times to permit vessels to enter and exit the harbor. Starting September 1, 2008, the harbor may be closed during construction at one-week intervals.

Construction work will start at the east breakwater of the Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor. The east breakwater will be removed in sections and reconstructed to provide a higher structure for more inner harbor protection. Work on the west breakwater is expected to begin in late October 2008. Dredging work is planned for early November 2008. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of April 2009.

The purpose of the project is to prevent damaging waves from entering the harbor and to make the harbor area safer for boaters.

“DLNR will be working with the Army Corps of Engineers and Kiewit Pacific Company to give boaters advance notice of any changes to harbor access,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson. “We thank the public for their patience during this work, which when completed will provide a safer harbor for all users.”

On September 6, 2007, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a construction contract for $18,771,500 to Kiewit Pacific Company of Kapolei, O‘ahu for the Kikiaola Light Draft Harbor Project. The project is being cost-shared between the Army Corps of Engineers and DLNR.
