Budweiser ShareLunker Season Ends

ATHENS, Texas-The Budweiser ShareLunker season ended April 30 with a total of 13 fish entered into the program.

While this is below the long-term average of 20 fish per season, the number of spawns was above average. Two fish spawned a total of six times, producing 110,148 eggs. The average number of spawns each season is four.

Gulf Shrimp Season To Close May 15

AUSTIN -- The Gulf of Mexico commercial shrimp season for both state and federal waters will close 30 minutes after sunset on Thursday, May 15 until an unspecified time in July.

The closing date is based on samples collected by the Coastal Fisheries Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) using trawl, bag seine and other information gathered from the shrimping industry.

FISHING REPORT FOR APRIL 30, 2008

CENTRAL

Thunderbird: Elevation 3 ft. above normal and murky. Saugeye fair to good on jigs off points. Crappie beginning to move up to shallow water to spawn, but are just not there yet. Some are being caught on minnows and jigs on structure at 4-5 ft. White bass good on jigs and in-line spinnerbaits off points and trolling. Largemouth bass good on tandem spinnerbaits in shallow areas of warmer water around structure. Catfish slow. Report submitted by Tony Woodruff, game warden stationed in Cleveland County.

Colorado Birders Celebrate Arrival of Feathered Friends from the South

Birdwatchers, or "birders" as they prefer to be called these days, are heading outdoors in droves to celebrate spring and the return of migratory birds to the Centennial State.

According to the Association of Colorado Field Ornithologists, 487 species of birds have been documented in Colorado. That puts the state seventh on the list of which states have the most bird species. California (637) and Texas (632) are the top two. What makes Colorado unique is that it does not have an ocean coast line that harbors shore birds.

April showers have brought May flowers to Kansas state parks, and with flowers come warm weather and more outdoor events. Many of the highlights of state park events are OK Kids Days. This May, several state parks will conduct events specifically for youth. These events provide opportunities for kids across Kansas to experience various outdoor activities, from birdwatching to fishing clinics. For many, this is an introduction to the outdoors. For others, it is a rekindling of outdoor interests.

Trout Fishing Mid-season Report

With three weeks of trout stocking still to go this spring, there's still plenty of great opportunities to fish in any of the state's 180 designated trout stocked waters. Nearly 475,000 trout have been stocked thus far, and over the next three weeks another 96,000 trout will be released into 60 of these waters.
